1. Inspect and Clean Up
Before starting any lawn care tasks, walk around your yard to assess the damage from winter. Remove any debris, such as branches or leaves, that have accumulated over the colder months. This allows your grass to breathe and receive sunlight effectively.
2. Raking and Dethatching
You can use a rake to gently dethatch your lawn, removing dead grass, roots, and debris that can prevent new grass from growing. The dead grass that you remove is left over grass from the previous growing season(s). By removing the thatch in your lawn, it will help to aerate the soil and promotes better water and nutrient absorption. I like to use a Power Rake for this, it does a really nice clean job, but if you're looking for a really good workout a regular sturdy rake will work as well.
3. Aeration
Consider aerating your lawn if it feels compacted. I aerate primarily in the spring to help those growing roots to expand by growing into the holes left by the aerator. Aerating also helps loosen the soil, allowing water, air, and nutrients to penetrate deeper into the roots. This promotes healthier root growth and overall lawn vitality. (You can see a pattern emerging here! The goal is really to clear things out so the lawn can get the nutrients it needs.)
4. Overseeding
Spring is an ideal time for overseeding to fill in bare patches and enhance your lawn's density. Choose high-quality grass seed that matches your existing turf type and spread it evenly over prepared soil. I always like to use a little top soil and rake the grass seed into it. The key is to keep the seeded areas moist until new grass establishes itself, and make sure to keep traffic off of it. After a couple weeks, you will see the new grass starting to sprout.
5. Fertilizing
This is one of the most important steps to get your lawn the start it needs. Apply a balanced fertilizer specifically formulated for spring use. Look for a fertilizer with a higher nitrogen content to encourage lush green growth. I also like to use one with a higher iron content. The iron helps give the grass a nice dark green colour. Follow manufacturer instructions carefully to avoid over-fertilizing, which can harm your lawn.
6. Weed Control
Tackle weeds early in the spring before they have a chance to spread. You can Apply pre-emergent herbicides to prevent weed seeds from germinating. For existing weeds, treat with post-emergent herbicides. It is recommended to treat the entire lawn when spraying for weeds. You can also manually remove them, roots and all.
7. Watering
Monitor soil moisture levels and adjust your watering schedule accordingly. Deep, infrequent watering encourages deep root growth and drought resistance. Water in the early morning to minimize evaporation and fungal diseases.
8. Mowing
Start mowing as soon as your grass begins to grow actively. Set your mower blade at a height that allows your grass to thrive—usually around 2.5 to 3 inches, but depending on your grass, it could be 4" or more. Longer grass holds moisture in the soil, chokes out weeds, and establishes a strong root system. Avoid cutting more than one-third of the grass blade's length in a single mowing session to prevent stress.
9. Edge and Define
Define lawn edges along sidewalks, driveways, and flower beds for a crisp, manicured look. Use a half-moon edger or a sharp spade to create clean lines, which also prevents grass from encroaching into garden beds and will save you time trying to weed it out later.
10. Monitor and Adjust
Throughout the spring season, regularly monitor your lawn's health and adjust your care routine as needed. Keep an eye out for signs of pests, diseases, or nutrient deficiencies, and address them promptly to prevent further damage.
By following these essential tips for spring lawn care, you can set your lawn up for success throughout the growing season. A healthy lawn not only enhances the beauty and value of your home but also provides a comfortable outdoor space where you can relax and spend time with your friends and family.
