Why Fertilize in the Fall?
Fall is a pivotal season for lawn care, especially when it comes to fertilizing. As the growing season winds down, your lawn’s roots continue to grow and store energy for the winter. Fertilizing in the fall helps strengthen these roots, providing them with the essential nutrients they need to survive the cold months and bounce back stronger in the spring.
When you apply the right fertilizer in the fall, you’re not just feeding your lawn for the moment—you’re setting it up for success months down the line. A well-fertilized lawn in the fall will be better equipped to fend off weeds, diseases, and pests, and will green up more quickly once the warm weather returns.
The Benefits of Using the Right Fertilizer
Using the appropriate fall fertilizer can make all the difference between a lawn that merely survives the winter and one that thrives. Here are a few key benefits:
Enhanced Root Growth: Fall fertilizers are typically rich in potassium, which promotes strong root development. This helps your lawn withstand the stresses of winter and encourages lush growth in the spring.
Improved Disease Resistance: A healthy, well-nourished lawn is less susceptible to diseases that can take hold during the dormant season.
Thicker, Greener Grass: Fall fertilization ensures that your grass has all the nutrients it needs to grow thick and green when spring arrives.
Reduced Weed Invasion: A dense, healthy lawn is better at crowding out weeds, reducing the need for herbicides.
There are many great fall fertilizer blends out there. We have touched on fertilizer blends here before. If you remember, there are three numbers that you will see on all bags of fertilizer that you will see. They stand for Nitrogen(N), Phosphorous (Ph), and Potassium(K). Most spring and summer blends are higher in N, but lower in Ph, and K. Fall blends typically tend to be lower in N, and roughly around the same in Ph and K. I like to use, and it is recommended to use a blend ratio of 12-25-12. This will still give a little N to your lawn. However, that important part for fall is in the Ph and K. They promote strong root growth, water uptake, and increased resiliency for the winter months ahead. I typically use a blend that is 14-16-10. I find it does a great job and hits all the things I am after.
Interesting Facts About Fall Lawn Fertilization
Historical Use of Manure: Before the advent of modern fertilizers, farmers used manure to enrich their fields, a practice that dates back thousands of years and is still used in organic farming today. We raise a few steers on our little acreage every year, and one thing we have a plenty is manure. We pile it in piles, turn it once or twice a year, and after a couple years of "curing", we have a nutrient rich product that we can add to our garden plot, flower beds etc.
The Role of Potassium: Potassium, one of the key nutrients in fall fertilizers, helps regulate various processes in plants, including water uptake and enzyme activation, making it essential for cold tolerance. When we increase the potassium in our grass, the increased water uptake as a result will help the grass be able to withstand the temperature changes, and fluctuations that we experience in a typical Alberta winter.
Fall vs. Spring Fertilization: While spring fertilization is focused on stimulating growth, fall fertilization is about building strength. The nutrients applied in the fall help grass survive winter and come back stronger in the spring. So even though we think that fertilizer will not affect or help our lawn in the fall because it is going dormant, fertilizing in the fall IS important. We want to give it a little help to get through the winter.
Conclusion
A fall fertilizer is crucial for setting your lawn up for success. By feeding your lawn in the fall, you’re ensuring that it has the strength to endure winter’s challenges and emerge lush and green in the spring. Whether you opt for a product sold at your local greenhouse, or if you buy from a larger box store, the results will be close to the same. So even though you may want to find just the "right" fertilizer, whatever blend or brand you choose will help your lawn.
Remember, a little effort in the fall can pay off big time when the snow melts and your lawn starts to wake up.
With the right care and attention, your lawn can be a source of pride year-round. Happy fertilizing!
